Madison city officials attempted to hold a press conference Thursday after a police officer shot and killed a man, identified as Corey Ruiz, at a busy intersection on Williamson and Baldwin streets Wednesday. The briefing was derailed by a group of protesters who arrived and took over the podium, Isiah Holmes reports. Meanwhile, Henry Redman covers hundreds of mourners gathered for a vigil on the spot where Ruiz was shot.

The union election of nurses at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison was certified Wednesday after a regional office of the National Labor Relations Board overruled the objections of the hospital’s parent company, SSM Health. Henry Redman has the details.
Vance Boelter pleaded guilty last month to the murders of Minnesota legislative leader Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, as well as the shooting of state Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife. On Thursday U.S. District Judge John Tunheim sentenced Boelter to two consecutive life sentences as well as an additional 40 years, the longest sentence he’s ever imposed on a person in the thousands of cases he’s heard over his career. “I believe it’s well-deserved,” he said. Michelle Griffith of the Minnesota Reformer reports.
