Friday, July 3: Hong’s working-class cred, Trump’s massive tax cut and spending bill one year later, Hannah Dugan’s sentencing and the ICE surge, Milwaukee prepares to respond to immigration crackdown

QUOTE OF THE DAY
“It turns out folks are pretty excited about taxing the rich … Wisconsin voters care more about solutions than labels.”

– Francesca Hong, candidate in the Democratic primary for governor

Francesca Hong is betting that her working-class background and her pledge to build a government that works for people will connect with a broad swath of Wisconsinites and fuel a movement that crosses partisan lines in a closely divided battleground state. Baylor Spears follows the candidate making waves in Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary as she tours the state.

The massive tax-cut and spending bill President Trump signed last year on the Fourth of July made dramatic cuts to healthcare and food assistance in Wisconsin. Erik Gunn reports on the impacts and efforts by advocacy organizations and Democrats to get the word out.

In a commentary, Editor Ruth Conniff examines Judge Hannah Dugan's sentencing and the meaning of July 4th celebrations marking freedom from tyranny amid the current ICE surge.

Milwaukee residents rallied Thursday to protest the immigration crackdown that led to a flurry of arrests in Wisconsin this week and to educate themselves and plan how to resist. Isiah Holmes has the story.
