Wednesday, October 7: Big money pours into downballot races, CAFO appeals water quality ruling, David Crowley endorses constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights, voting rights advocates bolster protections at the polls

QUOTE OF THE DAY
“Factory farm special interests care more about protecting corporate profits than protecting the groundwater Wisconsin families rely on. Ridge Breeze may have deep pockets for legal fees, but we’re organized, and we’re not going to let them off the hook.”

– Danny Akenson, an organizer with GROWW, in a statement on the Ridge Breeze dairy’s decision to appeal a judge’s decision that it must do more to monitor compliance with water quality standards

Billionaire Diane Hendricks recently contributed millions to help Republicans in their efforts to defend their legislative majorities, which are in jeopardy for the first time in more than 16 years. Baylor Spears reports on the big money pouring into races to control the Assembly and Senate.

A factory farm in Pierce County filed a lawsuit late last month appealing an administrative law judge’s decision that the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources didn’t include enough groundwater protections when approving a permit allowing the farm to expand from 1,700 to 6,500 cows. Henry Redman has the latest.

Democratic candidate David Crowley said Tuesday he will advocate for a constitutional amendment that would protect Wisconsin women’s right to abortion and reproductive healthcare. “Right now, women’s rights are only safe as the next election, and I don’t think Wisconsin’s women should have to hold their breath every four years,” he said at a forum with his running mate Sarah Godlewski and U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

As President Donald Trump refuses to rule out taking extreme action in the midterm elections, voting rights advocates and civil rights leaders are bolstering their voter protection efforts in anticipation of possible federal interference. Jonathan Shorman reports.
