Contract employees, freelancers and marginal workers now make up about one-third of the U.S. labor pool, with job insecurity and dead-end employment expanding. Paul Osterman, a professor emeritus at MIT, writes about his research on “disposable workers” in this piece from The Conversation.

President Donald Trump said earlier this year he’d “do anything necessary to make sure we have honest elections” this fall, declining to rule out sending the National Guard or federal law enforcement officers to polling locations throughout the country. Any such actions would lie outside the bounds of presidential power and the law, according to experts interviewed by States Newsroom. Jennifer Shutt reports on the limits of the law and how state officials are preparing for possible federal election interference.
