When a new board meets in August to review 12 applications from incarcerated people to have their sentences commuted under a new procedure authorized by Gov. Tony Evers, their recommendations will include a consideration of whether the applicant is likely to re-offend. Criminal Justice Fellow Frank Zufall reviews the research on what increases or reduces the risk that a former prisoner will wind up returning to prison.
While the Trump adininistration has gutted federal consumer protection agencies, across the country that work is ramping up in the offices of state attorneys general. Kevin Hardy of Stateline reports on the trend as AGs from both political parties team up to go after allegations of price gouging, deceptive marketing practices and antitrust violations.
The Trump administration on Monday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to halt a district court ruling that blocked President Donald Trump from restricting vote-by-mail. The move came just two days after a federal appeals court denied the adminstration’s request to go forward with Trump’s order and sets up a high-stakes confrontation with the midterm elections just three months away. Jacob Fischler of our Washington bureau team reports.
An “extremely dangerous” storm in the Fox Valley brought a tornado that hit parts of Appleton and Menasha Monday afternoon, damaging homes and leaving thousands without power. Henry Redman reports.
