Wisconsin primaries
NEW:
Deputy Editor Erik Gunn covers the Democratic primary in the 1st Congressional District, where three candidates are jockeying for their party’s nomination to challenge incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil.
Freelance videographer Jonathan Klett has full coverage of the candidate panel on data centers sponsored by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, in which the Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls explain their positions on this increasingly contentious issue.
Examiner reporters have been keeping up with primary races across the state over the last year. In contests that will help determine which party controls the state Legislature, Baylor Spears rounds up the races to watch with interactive maps of all the competitive races in both the Assembly and the state Senate.
Our voter guide has everything you need to know to vote and to check out the contested races that will be on your ballot on Tuesday.
In the chaotic Democratic gubernatorial primary, our reporters have been following all the twists and turns during the campaign as well as producing in-depth profiles of each of the candidates. This week, Spears covered Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley’s swing through Madison in his sprint to the finish and freelance videographer Jonathan Klett captured full video of Crowley’s pitch to voters in Waukesha. Klett also documented Francesca Hong’s Milwaukee rally with Hasan Piker and Minnesota U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar while Spears covered the latest dynamics of a race Hong has been leading, with Crowley rushing to catch up.
In a commentary, Editor Ruth Conniff writes, “It’s hard not to get caught up in the increasingly contentious Democratic primary battle that’s mostly being waged online this week. But outside of the social media echo chambers, people who are taking the brunt of a vicious, authoritarian regime are asking deeper questions about how to build political power.”
Madison clears protest encampment after police shooting
Madison city workers, police and state patrol officers cleared protesters from the intersection of Williamson and South Baldwin Streets early Tuesday morning, putting an end to the encampment that had blocked off the major east side intersection since a Madison police officer shot and killed Corey Ruiz there July 22. Henry Redman reports on the encampment’s dismantling and local reactions.
Federal changes to Head Start, Medicaid hit Wisconsin
Wisconsin providers and childcare experts say the federal changes to Head Start announced this week would roll back standards for classroom quality, teacher qualifications and health services. Erik Gunn has the story.
Gunn also covers a wheelchair ride across Wisconsin to call attention to the dire effects of Medicaid cuts on people with disabilities. Carl Schulze rolled all the way to the Capitol from Fox Crossing near Neenah to dramatize the harm from cuts that could cost him his home health care and his freedom.
In a related story, Stateline’s Anna Clarie Vollers covers disability advocates around the country fighting a surge of federal and state actions that have eroded protections meant to keep people with disabilities living and working in their communities, rather than in institutions.
